Cosmos Video must go down...

If any of you have lived or do live in Kaysville you have probably heard of Cosmos Video. The outside and inside is very creepy and ghetto. One thing that has always bugged me about this place is when you walk in there is pornography videos at the front of the store so if you took children they would see the cases. I have NOT been to Cosmos for over 10 years because I will not support that video store and I know many other people that will not either.
The other day my little sister had to do a research paper for school and had to watch a video. She could not find this video anywhere as she called many video stores. Her last resort was to call Cosmos... they had it, so she went and rented the video at the store. The next day she went to take it back and was in line waiting at the desk. She noticed that they had STILL have not bought a computer system for rentals. They STILL use 3x5 cards. Than she noticed while the lady kept going back to get the movies for customers that all the thousands of 3x5 cards were sitting on the counter right in front of all customers to see. Every second that went by my sister became more furious! When it was time for her to give back the movie, she nicely asked the lady if she could get her 3x5 card with ALL her information on it. She had remembered she gave the lady her credit card number, expiration date, address and phone number. The lady then told my sister that she would NOT give her the 3x5 card with her information. My sister argued with the lady for a while and lady would NOT budge. My sister ran out furious. The day after my sister, Krista, Me and my mom went to a movie and dinner and she started to tell us this story. My sister Krista was getting so mad about it. So come to find out, the next couple days after Krista had written a email to Gephardt on Channel 2 HAHA. Here is what she said...

Dear Mr. Gephardt:
My sister, Morgan, is a student of SL Community College. She needed to find a video for one of her classes. She rented this video at Cosmos Video in Kaysville. When she rented this video, the clerk took her drivers license number, credit card number and exp date, along with her address and phone number. That normally wouldn't matter except that Cosmos Video does not have a computer system. They use a 3 by 5 card filing system for their customers. She was very leary about giving them this information, but she needed the video.
She went back the next day and stood in line to return the video. There was only 1 clerk working at the time and as the clerk continually ran in the back to find videos for the customers (they don't put the video's on the shelves), she noticed ALL the 3 by 5 cards were sitting on the counter. Anyone could of taken those cards and could have thousands of people's personal information.
When she got up to the counter, she returned the video and asked for the 3 by 5 card. They would not give it to her! She got in a argument and she told the clerk she did not want them to have her personal information on a card that anyone could take. The clerk told her that no one would ever take the cards. She expressed to her that it is 2008 and nothing is safe anymore. She again demanded for the 3 by 5 card. The clerk would not give it up. She told Morgan she shreds the cards. My sister asked her how often, and she told her that every 6 months they shred all the cards that haven't rented in awhile.
Once my sister told me about this story, I was shocked. I couldn't believe that they use 3 by 5 card's that everyone has access to!!
I lived in Kaysville for 20 years and stopped renting at Cosmos Video over 10 years ago. The atmosphere of the store is very creepy! I knew they used 3 by 5 cards over 10 years ago, but had no idea they still used them. Please help!! Cosmos Video needs to get a computer system and stop using paper with personal information. Anyone's identity could be taken....
Thanks,
Krista Beardsley

1 hour later Gephardt had emailed Krista back to ask for my little sisters phone number and email address..today Channel 2 called my little sis and got info about it and said they are going to talk to Cosmos. I h0pe they do a story about this. Cosmos needs to CLOSE!!!

Holy crap!!! Go Morgan and Krista! That place is totally awful. Ew! I hope they take care of it- I would be willing to wager that they don't shred the cards and she was just saying that to get Morgan off her back.

Nice! If they're not even using computers, that just shows you how backward-thinking they are. That place is so creepy.

Wow! That would make me mad too! I hope that you guys can get this all sorted out. Good luck!!

Good for your sister. I have only gone to Cosmos before to get videos for a school assignment, since they are the only place I can find with old rentals. I always hated the filing system, too.

The system is a little nuts. But they do carry a lot of movies other places dont...thats a positive:-)Its the only place I can go get my 80's mysteries. I would be happy if they just updated their system. Good luck with everything.

I see you're frustrated, but I think you could find better causes to protest against.

They have been using that 3x5 system for 25+ years, and it has worked for them.

When you're a small family business, you have to save where you can to compete against the big guys (blockbuster, etc). If their system is cheap and works, why pay for a database? I've had my personal info stolen twice from databases, but never from a 3x5 card.

It's a shame that there aren't many little guys in this business anymore. You might not appreciate them, but communities are worse off without them. I grew up renting from them, and I'd be sad to see them close.

I went in with my 10 year old son to rent a movie. I had just bought him a box of candy at Albertson's that was in his pocket. When we got home from Cosmos, the owner called and demanded that we return the movie that he had stolen from their store! I was furious, I told her, that if she had concerns about him stealing a movie while we were there, why didn't she ask us on the spot, and I could've shown her the box of candy. We haven't been back since, either. Besides, the store reaks of ceigarette smell!! D. Barlow

Do you guys have nothing better to do than shut peoples' business down? From my perspective it seems like a nice little store run by a nice family like you and me just trying to get by, and pay their bills through a little video store they put together.it was a refreshing break from the usual blockbuster monopoly or Netflix as those are basically the only options left. The shop is probably already having a hard enough time getting by competing with Netflix so you're potentially giving this family a very bad day with your negative comments. And who really is going to steal those cards? I wouldn't, hopefully you wouldn't. We live in kaysville Utah and as far as I'm concerned those cards are completely safe. As your post said you looked all over and couldn't find the video you were looking anywhere else. I noticed this as well. I was pleased to find a nice little ma and pa shop where they carry some nice classics instead of all the usual new releases. You can't find many authentic little shops like that these days where you can get a movie with real substance. I like Cosmo video a lot the guy I met running the place seemed to have some good character and he does not deserve to have his business shut down because of some 3x5 cards (which probably help his business run very smooth in a power outage ) and some porno videos 10 years ago. A little sex never hurt anyone, quite the contrary.

It was funny for me to find this as I just came home from yet another bad experience at Cosmos and did an online search to post a review. They are always so rude to the customers. My little sister went in to rent a video and our old account had lapsed. They were so rude to her she came out to the car practically in tears because they wouldn't let her rent without an account. I was perfectly happy to go in and let her use my ID to set up a new account. When I asked why they needed to write down all my personal info (DOB, driver's license, phone number, etc.) the woman working the counter treated me like an idiot. It only took a few seconds of her explaining that I could run off and never return before I smiled and agreed, happy to let her do her job and take the information. However, she kept giving me examples of why they needed the information becoming increasingly rude with every passing second. I don't know if they need to be shut down, but they could certainly benefit from new management and better customer service. I don't think I have ever been treated well in the ten on and off years I've been going there. They do have an excellent selection of videos and are one of the only rental stores left in the area. (People have already mentioned the smell, but I think it should be added that it is enough to cause a headache.) From now on, I think I'll spend the few extra dollars to buy a used copy of whatever I need online, or at the nearest Graywhale or FYE.

I went in today (6/10/2014) not knowing how sketchy they are. At first it was fine yes ghetto but fine. I went with my two year old and five year old sons. My two year old, being two, was overwhelmed with excitement and starting grabbing everything in sight. Of course I made him out things back and tried to hold his hands. But as a two year old excitement will often take over he started running down the isle. On my way to grab him the lady behind the counter was coming around the corner with my sons wrist in her hand. In was not a gentle guide. She was pulling him. The look in my sons face was one of terror. He did not know this lady. And who the **** just grabs someone else's child like that? Like I said it wasn't a sweet, "here honey here is your mom." She was man handling him. As she let go if his hand she looked at me and said, " I can't have him knocking down things off the shelf like that. He's doing that to be naughty." I looked at her and said, "no. He not trying to be naughty. He's being two." I out my movies down on a random shelf walked out with my children. Just before leaving I said, "sorry kids. We can't come here anymore. There is a mean lady. And nobody touches my kids like that."

Grrrr.... Momma bear just got poked.

I had a bad experience last night when we went there too. I found this blog after trying to find other reviewsto see if anyone else had the same experience I did. The lady at the front desk was so super rude to us when I asked if they hada credit card machine andwhy she needed to write down our info. She then proceeded to cough her lungsout and then patted my babys hand. Wewere so put off and we will not be going back

I am management at cosmos video as far as the 3x5 card system goes we have been in business for 31 yrs and we have never had any information stolen from us. It is actually safer than having your card ran by companies whom have had card information stolen such as Home Depot, americafirst credit union, target etc, look at all of the computer viruses these days, Vs on a 3x5 card so your comments only show lack of intelligence; as far as the older lady grabbing your child by the hand and walking him over to you goes, your obnoxious child was jumping up and down on the movie boxes, stomping on them and throwing them on the ground, so her being irate was totally justified. If you put as much effort into being a bitch and writing stupid shit online as you did as to writing a negative review your child might not be as big of a nuisance. People like you whom are destructive toward a family owned business are a disgrace and are not welcome at our business so take your negetive comments and Ill behaved child and try redbox or netflix. if you like Try to rent from cosmos everyone will not rent to you. Thanks for you and your child being a non-productive parasite to society! :) I would like to tell you what I really think, but I cannot say those types of words toward your parasitic, low society personnel over the Internet as it would offend some of our more productive non-parasitic customers whom have children which are well-behaved and don't have a white trash mother with I'll behaved childred.
Thanks,
Management

August 6 anonymous,

How many businesses have you visited where your credit card was stolen?......Home Depot, target, America first, etc. they're all on computer! We are not, use your head and your high school degree. Many reasons apply besides computers, thank you :)

I have rented from Cosmos many times, but have to say that reading the "managements justification of one of the workers treating a two-year old child like that makes me think twice about going there again. To Tom V: A 2 year old pulling things of the shelves, or even jumping on video boxes does not give you the right to physically handle them in anyway, especially roughly. It doesn't matter if you thought the child was ill-behaved; it is not your place. If that had been my child, I would've contacted the authorities and pressed assault charges, and probably brought a civil law suit against you as well.

Too funny reading the heading to this blog story! Good grief get a life ! Please look up the meaning of the term "chicken shit" you might see William, Megan, Carla, and Tom's picture there.

boo hoo! Its a local small business. Take your big business money elsewhere!!! We have rented there for years and never have had an issue with the 3x5 cards. They keep it simple. It is people like you that cause small local businesses like Cosmos to want to close their doors. Go back to your shopping at Wal-Mart!!
